2009 Ford Ranger Exhaust Manifold Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the exhaust manifold on 2009 Ford Ranger?
A: Position the vehicle on a hoist with neutral selection before disconnecting the ground cable of the battery as the first step in exhaust manifold replacement. The first steps should include removing the accessory drive belt while draining the engine cooling system. Beginning installation involves removing the 2 downpipe flange nuts then disconnecting both the front coolant outlet pipe hoses from the upper radiator hose. A/C compressor removal becomes necessary if present. To extract the oil level indicator and its tube you must first detach the heater coolant hose from the front coolant outlet pipe then remove its 2 bolts followed by discarding the O-ring seal. The procedure requires you to eliminate the front coolant outlet pipe securing bolts followed by discarding the O-ring seal. Use 5 pushpins to open the right inner fender splash shield, following which you can detach generator electrical wiring and unscrew 5 bolts that hold the generator and support bracket in place. Beginning with the removal of both coolant tube nuts users can position the tube aside before completing the removal of seven manifold nuts, exhaust manifold and its gasket while discarding the nuts and gasket together. The removal of seven exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head studs is followed by discarding them while cleaning and inspecting the exhaust manifold for any use of metal scrapers or abrasive tools on sealing surfaces. You should install 7 new exhaust manifold-to-cylinder head studs before tightening them to 17 Nm (150 lb-in). Install a new exhaust manifold gasket on the position before installing 7 new nuts which should be torqued to 54 Nm (40 lb-ft). Install the coolant tube with two nuts set to 20 Nm (177 lb-in) before installing the generator support bracket assembly and applying the 5 bolts during two installation stages with initial finger-tightening and subsequent tightening to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft). The generator electrical connections should be reestablished while the battery cable nut requires tightening to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). To complete the installation of the right inner splash shield you must use 5 pushpins followed by lubricating a new O-ring seal with engine coolant and positioning the front coolant outlet pipe along with installing two bolts tightened at 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). To install the oil level indicator you must first position its tube assembly then bolt two pieces to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) before adding the indicator. The heater coolant hose should be connected to the front coolant outlet pipe before reinstalling the A/C compressor if present and attaching the upper radiator hose followed by the degas bottle coolant hose and tightening the 2 exhaust downpipe flange nuts to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). After installing the accessory drive belt users should reconnect the ground cable to the battery and complete the engine cooling system filling and bleeding process.
