2009 Ford Ranger Leaf Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the leaf spring on 2009 Ford Ranger?
A: Start leaf spring maintenance on a vehicle by placing it in NEUTRAL on the hoist with a suitable jack underneath the rear axle. The service begins with removing and discarding the lower shock absorber bolt and nut before installing a new nut and tighting it to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Proper clamp load retention is achieved when new U-bolts are installed properly with a 93 mm (3.66 in) distance range ± 3 mm (0.12 in). Start the leaf spring service and repair by removing and discarding the 4 rear U-bolt nuts and then taking out the U-bolts together with the spring plate. The TORSEN(R) axle U-bolt nuts need a cross pattern tightening process that includes steps of 25 Nm (18 lb-ft), 50 Nm (37 lb-ft), 75 Nm (55 lb-ft) and finally 103 Nm (76 lb-ft). The standard U-bolt nuts on axles should receive crosswise torque applications advancing from 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) through 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) until reaching 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) and 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). The rear axle should be lowered carefully while removing the rear spring spacer when such a system is present. The process includes removal of the spring-to-frame bracket flagnut then bolt before installing a fresh bolt and torquing it to 200 Nm (148 lb-ft). To extract the spring use tools to remove first the shackle-to-spring bolt and nut which can afterward be replaced with a new nut torqued to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft). Replace the spring shackle by discarding the spring shackle-to-frame bracket bolt and flagnut then install a new bolt which should be tightened to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft). The installation process ends by performing the opposite steps of removal to finish the work.
