2009 Lincoln Navigator Muffler Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Tail Pipe and Muffler on 2009 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The first step for tailpipe and muffler servicing requires placing the vehicle into neutral position on a hoist. Remove the 6 bolts securing the transfer case skid plate when such equipment exists. Open the Torca® clamp which connects the tailpipe to the resonator until it is loose from the muffler assembly. Expedition models require the tailpipe removal and Navigator models need the resonator removal after disconnecting its 2 isolator and bracket assembly bolts. A suitable jackstand will secure the muffler while you detach the 2 bolts that link the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter to the muffler assembly. Separate the isolators from the muffler assembly while keeping away from axle boots before rerouting the muffler assembly outlet above the rear axle to prevent any damage from occurring. The installation process requires cleaning of the mating surfaces on the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter to muffler assembly and an evaluation of exhaust hanger isolators. Replace worn out isolators after inspection. Mount the muffler assembly and fasten its isolators before securing both bolts that join the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter to the muffler assembly. Begin by installing the outer bolt securely before torquing the inner bolt to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft) followed by adjusting the outer bolt to meet the same specification. Complete the installation by securing the tailpipe from Expedition models through the isolator and 2 bracket assembly bolts which should be tightened to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Navigator models require the resonator installed with similar bolt procedure. Complete the Torca® clamp connecting the tailpipe or resonator to the muffler assembly at a torque of 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). Perform the exhaust system alignment procedure when the exhaust system isolators measure anything other than zero load in their position. Install the transfer case skid plate by screwing in its 6 bolts to a torque of 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
