2008 Lincoln Navigator Muffler Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the muffler and tailpipe on 2008 Lincoln Navigator?
A: Service and repair operations on the muffler and tailpipe should begin by hoisting the vehicle into NEUTRAL. First remove the transfer case skid plate when fitted. The Torca® clamp joining the tailpipe to the muffler assembly needs its clamp loosened. The tailpipe for Expeditions requires removing the bracket assembly bolts along with the isolator before detachment but the Navigator needs the removal of resonator bracket assembly bolts and isolator for detachment. Position a proper jackstand under the muffler before unfastening all bolts and nuts that connect the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly components. Use great caution to guide the muffler assembly outlet above the rear axle position so it avoids contact with axle boots to shield them from harm. Before extracting the muffler assembly from the vehicle you must remove its isolators from their attachments. When installing the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly enable the mating surfaces to be completely clean then evaluate exhaust hanger isolators for wear and replace any damaged units. The muffler assembly needs installation while adding the isolators to it. First secure the outer bolt on the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter-to-muffler assembly with 63 Nm (46 lb-ft) torque before tightening the inner bolt to the same torque then readjusting the outer bolt to 63 Nm (46 lb-ft) torque once again. Secure the bracket assembly to the tailpipe for Expedition and resonator for Navigator using bolts which should be tightened to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Stretch the Torca® clamp joining the muffler assembly to the tailpipe or resonator until it reaches a torque of 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). Before continuing check that exhaust system isolators show zero load status because non-zero readings require exhaust system alignment. Returning the transfer case skid plate requires proper tightening to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
