2009 Lincoln Town Car Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle in the front suspension on 2009 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The task to service and repair the front suspension steering knuckle starts with tire and wheel removal. The brake hose needs protection due to anchoring the caliper and plate without support damage so use bolts temporarily and secure the assembly with mechanic's wire. The installation of caliper and anchor plate assembly bolts requires torque settings to 160 Nm (118 lb-ft). The service begins by detaching the brake disc along with pulling back the rubber splash shield to access the wheel speed sensor electrical connector. You should use the hex-holding feature to prevent stud rotation before loosening the outer tie rod nut. After that, disconnect the tie rod from the wheel knuckle and secure the new nut with 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Use the same procedure to uninstall and eliminate the stabilizer bar link upper nut. Install an alternate nut which requires tightening at 63 Nm (46 lb-ft). Take out the lower stabilizer link nut with stabilizer bar link while discarding the nut along with exact torqueing of 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) for the new nut during assembly. The first task should be detachment of the steering knuckle wiring harness retainer from the wheel speed sensor before discarding the upper ball joint nut during replacement by torquing the new nut to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft). The wheel knuckle removal requires repeating the lower ball joint nut procedure then discarding the old nut while tightening the new nut to 150 Nm (111 lb-ft) torque. The four bolts must be detached from the wheel bearing and wheel hub assembly before installation while discarding the bolts and tightening new bolts to 120 Nm (89 lb-ft). The installation and alignment check is completed in reverse order following restraint of the front end alignment. Component adjustment can be needed during this process.
