How to Properly Service and Repair a Tail Pipe and Muffler on Ford Crown Victoria?

Start service procedures on the muffler and tailpipe by putting the vehicle into NEUTRAL position on a hoist. Turn off power supply to the air suspension system to prevent unexpected pressure changes in air springs because such occurrences may cause shifting of the vehicle which could result in injuries to people. After removing the 2 nuts and the clamp discard them before torquing the new clamp to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) when installing it. A suitable exhaust cutter should be used for disconnecting the muffler from the tailpipe. To ensure safety check the isolators for defects and replace them if necessary before removing the tailpipe by detaching its isolator. The process of checking and removing the isolators must be performed again for the muffler. New exhaust fasteners should be fitted before final tightening when working on complete installation. Draw the flanges together uniformly by following alternate fastener tightening according to specification before tightening the fasteners to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
