Ford E-250 Drag Link Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Drag Link on Ford E-250?
    A:
The center link service/repair procedure starts with replacing the steering sector shaft arm drag link or the tie rod end if the ball stud is too loose in the socket, the drag link is bent, or the taper for the tie rod end is loose. Also, if there are nicks, cuts or tears, replace the front suspension steering ball stud dust seal. Never try to straighten a broken drag link or tie rod end. First, remove the castellated nuts from the steering drag link and throw away the cotter pins. Then, break the castellated nuts and take off the outer tie rod end from the right-hand steering knuckle and then the left-hand inner tie rod end from the steering sector shaft arm drag link. Remove the castellated nut from the drag link on the steering sector shaft discarding the cotter pin, then remove the nut. Using a Pitman Arm Puller, remove the steering sector shaft arm drag link and remove the tie rod adjusting sleeve and record the number of turns needed to remove the sleeve. Reverse the removal procedure to install; install new cotter pins. Make sure both bolts and nuts of the tie rod adjusting sleeve clamp for the tie rod end are within 45 degrees with the threaded ends of the bolts on the left tie rod end facing the front of the vehicle and the right facing the rear of the vehicle. Lastly, secure the castellated nuts and the tie rod adjusting sleeve bolts, adjust toe-in and provide good sight lines.
