- Q: How to Safely Remove and Replace a Camshaft on Ford Edge?A: The beginning step to retrieve and put back the camshaft requires a debris-free working zone to stop foreign elements from getting inside oil or coolant channels since these might trigger engine breakdowns. The procedure begins with unscrewing the transaxle support insulator through bolt and nut and continuing with the removal of three nuts and the bolt along with the transaxle support insulator bracket. The installation requires removal of the nut, bolt and Engine Mount brace followed by the four engine mount nuts and lastly the three bolts which secure the engine mount. Because entire removal is required, lower the vehicle engine and transaxle combination while disconnecting engine block heater wiring harness retainers when applicable. The service procedure requires an employee to disconnect the PCV hose from the PCV Valve and the throttle body electrical connector followed by detaching the wiring harness retainers from the upper intake manifold. The first step involves removing both the upper intake manifold support bracket bolt together with all six bolts that join the upper intake manifold. We must discard all gasket material during this process. Detach the electrical connectors of the RH Catalyst Monitor Sensor and PSP switch and RH Variable Camshaft Timing solenoid and all three RH coil-on-plug electrical connectors. Detach the wiring harness retainers on the right valve cover and disconnect the left VCT solenoid electrical connector and three LH coil-on-plug electrical connectors along with their retainers on the left valve cover. Begin by uninstalling six bolts along with six coil-on-plug units before gradually loosening the eleven stud bolts to separate the LH valve cover including the gasket disposal. Another valve cover removal happens with the discarding of its separated gasket. Tests should be carried out on all VCT solenoid seals and spark plug tube seals. Any damaged parts must be immediately replaced. The Power Steering Pump together with the accessory drive belt tensioner can be removed through their respective bolt removal. Begin the procedure by using a strap wrench to take off the crankshaft bolt together with washer before employing a 3-jaw puller to remove the crankshaft pulley while using an oil seal remover to remove the crankshaft front seal. Start by removing the engine mount bracket bolts together with the two engine mount studs before taking out the engine front cover bolts. Finger-tighten the six engine front cover bolts before criss-cross tightening them to let the engine front cover-to-cylinder block seal break loose and then remove the engine front cover. Clean the engine front cover through 15,000 rpm brush action of the 3M Roloc Bristle Disk (2-in white, part number 07528) while carefully checking for any residue. Engine cavities should be covered by clean lint-free shop towels to stop contamination. The cylinder block sealing surfaces should receive three-stage preparation which involves removing silicone deposits and gasket materials followed by silicone remover application and metal surface prep for complete oil and coolant removal. Proper alignment of the timing marks on Variable Camshaft Timing assemblies requires clockwise crankshaft rotation together with correct installation of cylinder block dowel pins. The Camshaft Holding Tool should be installed onto both the LH and RH camshafts to maintain their position at Top Dead Center. Loose the three bolts from the Right Hand and Left Hand VCT housings but discard the housing seals. Start by eliminating the primary Timing Chain Tensioner arm together with its component followed by the removal of both the LH primary timing chain guide and chain itself. Before disassembling the LH VCT assembly the technician should compress the LH secondary timing chain tensioner to collapse position then discard the LH VCT assembly bolt along with the LH exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt. Remove the Camshaft Holding Tool before continuing with the extraction of LH camshafts while maintaining both LH camshafts in the neutral position. Then eliminate the LH camshaft bearing caps with their bolts to recover the LH camshafts. The compression and removal process for the RH secondary timing chain tensioner needs to be performed while discarding the RH VCT assembly bolt and the RH exhaust camshaft sprocket bolt before extracting the RH assembly. Use the Camshaft Holding Tool to extract the RH camshafts after setting the camshafts to the neutral position and removing RH camshaft bearing caps together with their bolts.
