The Trailing Arm in Ford Expedition vehicles is the component of the trailing-link suspension in which the axle is restrained by this arm and connected to the chassis. Its main role is thus to reduce articulation beyond that required for turning, thus improving vehicle stability and responsiveness. In Ford Expeditions various types of trailing-arm suspensions are used; the normal trailing arm suspension may consist of several links and the Panhard rod for the purpose of providing lateral location. Also, the semi trailing arm suspension has triangular arm style that makes it possible for rear wheels to have their independent movements. These changes help create more room for load-housing as well as providing a more level deck in the vehicle cargo area which is well-suited in the larger models such as the Expedition.

Ford Expedition Trailing Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service the lower trailing arm on Ford Expedition?
    A:
The service of the lower trailing arm starts with wheel and tire removal. The technician should start by discarding low trailing arm-to-wheel knuckle bolts before moving to lower trailing arm-to-frame bolt and flagnut before finally removing the lower trailing arm. Install the new lower trailing arm by itself but do not tighten the bolt now. Secondly attach the new lower trailing arm-to-frame bolt and flagnut with light torque. You should install the two new lower trailing arm-to-wheel knuckle bolts in a loose manner while leaving out tightenable fasteners. The next step requires the installation of the wheel and tire followed by lowering the vehicle until it rests on the wheel and tires. The installation requires tightening both lower trailing arm-to-wheel knuckle bolts to 103 Nm (76 lb-ft) then the lower trailing arm-to-frame bolt to 275 Nm (203 lb-ft). The suspension requires fasteners made with identical part numbers or equivalent quality parts to preserve both performance and safe operations.
