How to Service and Repair the In-Line Automatic Transmission Filter on Ford F-150?

The first step before servicing or repairing the transmission fluid in-line filter requires a vehicle in NEUTRAL position on a hoist. The presence of a transmission fluid in-line filter requires installing a new filter whereas no filter demands installation of a new filter kit. Installation of filter or kit should be avoided if the repair work is external to the transmission system. Every newly-installed transmission at Ford including those from authorized remanufacturers requires a transmission fluid inline filter to be added. First uninstall the bolts and skid plate when present before cutting out a section of rubber hose along with the transmission fluid cooler return tube. Clean the end of the return tube then fully position it within the fitting before tightening the ferrule nut through a finger-tight initial stage and completing with additional one and one-half turns. Mount the transmission fluid in-line filter according to its directional arrow which must point in the direction of the cooling system and the transmission. All tubing and rubber hoses entering the filter should maintain a 60-degree maximum bend angle. Complete the installation by tightening all hose clamps and adding the skid plate along with its bolts then clean the transmission fluid pan section and place the sticker. Finish by filling the transmission container with recommended fluid to the correct mark then testing operation while inspecting the filter for any sign of leakage.
