- Q: How to service and repair the Transmission Pan, gasket, and filter on Ford F-250 Super Duty?A: Start by placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position and hoisting it before servicing and repairing the fluid pan and filter along with the gasket. The fluid drainage starts by removing the transmission drain plug followed by removing the transmission fluid pan and its gasket and the filter in sequence. Extra caution is needed while pulling the transmission fluid filter seal because damage to the seal bore will create transmission failure. Check the transmission fluid bore for any seal presence and extract the seal if it exists. Vehicle models with external remote filters should use correct bottom pan designs to stop cavitation which causes both filter cracking and transmission damage during operation. The serviceable high efficiency sump filter (HESF) on late build vehicles without remote filtering requires the correct bottom pan for proper operation so transmission damage can be avoided. A new filter and seal needs installation only after removing the old filter seal from the system. A crisscross pattern must be used to tighten all transmission fluid pan bolts before installing the fluid pan gasket and fluid pan by torqueing them to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.). Secure the transmission fluid pan drain plug by tightening it to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). The specified transmission fluid must be used to prevent operational breakdowns and system failure. Pump clean transmission fluid amounting to 7.0L (7.5 qt) into the transmission through its designated fluid filler tube. Check the gear range engagements by running the engine while moving the selector lever through all positions. The transmission fluid level should be check at normal operating temperature between 66-77° C (150-170° F) with engine running and vehicle in NEUTRAL gear position. Add 0.24L (0.5 pt) increases of fluid until reaching the correct level, while keeping the fluid inside the hot range cross-hatched area of the transmission fluid level indicator.
