How to service and repair the front rack and pinion steering gear on Lincoln LS?

A suitable holding device must keep the steering wheel position straight ahead to stop intermediate shaft rotation which may damage the Clock Spring. If the shaft has turned, the Clock Spring requires removal and recentering. Place the vehicle on a hoist while in NEUTRAL position before removing components using the correct order. The installation steps should be done in an opposite order to removal procedures. Perform a system leak test immediately after installation after you fill and purge the system. If needed, check and adjust the front end alignment. The hex holding feature should be used during tie-rod end nut removal to stop the stud from rotating. Replace the steering gear with rack and pinion.
