- Q: How to Service and Repair Automatic Transmission Shift Levers on Lincoln MKX?A: It is essential to begin transmission shifter service and repair by using a specific tool to remove the automatic transmission shift lever trim ring on MKX vehicles. A suitable tool must be used to lift the armrest before removing both the center console trim cover from all vehicles. The power outlet trim cover requires the removal of its two fasteners before placing it aside. The end of the automatic transmission shift lever cable should detach from its position on the automatic transmission shift lever before gently removing the two tabs and extracting the automatic transmission shift lever cable from the housing. Remove the automatic transmission shift lever by first detaching its electrical connector then removing its securing bolts. To install, place the automatic transmission shift lever in position then bolt it with tightening torque set at 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). After reconnecting the electrical connector, you must verify the automatic transmission shift lever cable locking tabs as well as the cable end position on the ball stud. A click sound indicates that the cable achieved correct bracket placement, which can be verified by gentle pulling motion. Feed the automatic transmission shift lever cable into the housing before setting the automatic transmission shift lever position to REVERSE while taking off the cable end from the manual control lever.
