Mercury Grand Marquis Spark Plug Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a spark plug on Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: Start by removing the Ignition Coil and then extract the spark plugs from the engine while cleaning the spark plug well using compressed air. Check for a bridged gap along with deposit build-up caused by oil or carbon fouling on spark plugs before cleaning them will be needed. Examine the insulator shell bore electrodes for oil fouling through black wet deposits because excessive oil entering the combustion chamber occurs due to ring or Piston wear or excessive valve-to-guide clearance or insufficient bearing health; solve any oil leaks and replace the spark plug if necessary. Illuminating carbon deposits from incorrect heat range or dirty air cleaner or excessive idling or rich fuel mixtures can indicate carbon fouling; clean the spark plug if carbon deposits are present. In normal burning conditions one should inspect for light tan or gray deposits on the firing tip of the spark plug while pre-ignition issues can be detected by melted electrodes and possible insulator damage that may result from wrong ignition timing and fuel type or improper heli-coil installation. The presence of small black or gray-brown spots combined with bluish-burnt electrodes and a white or light gray insulator indicates overheating which can stem from engine overheating, wrong fuel type, loose spark plugs, incorrect heat range or low Fuel Pump pressure or incorrect ignition timing thus requiring replacement of the spark plug. The last step in the inspection involves checking for spot deposits that look like bubbles or blisters at the spark plug because it experienced sudden acceleration. If these deposits are present, clean the spark plug. To install the spark plugs correctly you should follow the steps in reverse order to installation. After making any gap adjustments you need to complete the spark plug installation.
