  • Q: What are the steps involved in inspecting and preparing piston/connecting rod assemblies before reassembly on Mercury Grand Marquis?
    A:
    There are some preconditions for the start of the inspection process-the piston/connecting rod assemblies should be washed and the original piston rings should be pulled off the pistons and new ones should be used in the process of assembly. To remove the rings from the pistons one should carefully use a piston ring installation tool and not should not nick or gouge the rings. End initially using a hand held wire brush or fine emery cloth, after most deposits have been removed, to remove all remaining carbon from the top of the piston; do not use a wire brush mounted in a drill motor, as this will erode the surface of the soft piston material. A piston ring groove cleaning tool should be used to clear carbon residues from the ring groove and to clear the groove clean or a portion of the old ring can also be used, but none of the operations should cause any removal of metal or destruction of the groove. Piston/rod assemblies should be cleaned using solvent after having been cleaned, and then dried using compressed air, but making absolutely sure that the oil return holes located at the back sides of the ring grooves are free of any dirt. If the pistons and cylinder walls are not damaged or as excessively worn and if the engine block has not been rebored new pistons may not be required; however, as a rule, new piston rings should always be provided during a rebuild. Every piston should be checked for crack, scoring, scuffing, holes and burned area, which may be owing to overheating, abnormal combustion or spark knock and therefore the cooling and lubri-cation systems should be checked thoroughly. These include some small pit corrosion which may be due to leakage of coolant into the combustion chamber or crank case in the case of IC engines, and leakage into the crank case or oil sump in the case of lubricating oil. Check the piston ring side clearance with a feeler gauge at the different locations on the groove for each piston ring; be sure to insert the correct ring on the groove and; if the clearance is out of the provided limits, new piston rings will be needed. The piston-to-bore clearance must be checked by measuring the bore and the diameter of the piston by comparing the two; if the space is more than what is recommended, then such a block will require reboring together with new pistons and rings. Piston-to-rod clearance can be checked by twisting the piston and the rod in one direction and the other; any free movement or looseness would imply wear that has to be adjusted, often by resizing and fitting new pins at an automotive machine shop. If pistons have to be pulled out of the connecting rods, then they should be taken for checking for bend and twist to a machine shop and the same case should apply for the checking of connecting rods for cracks and other damages and old bearing inserts should be temporarily removed for cleaning and inspection before reassembly and if the engine is being rebuilt due to a connecting rod knock then new rods should be fitted.
