Mercury Timing Belt allows crankshaft and camshaft to align and hit their marks. Mercury evolved as a badge of soft rides and hard appearance out of an upstart during the 1930s. It stole the name of the fleet-footed god and ran after comfort with spacious cabins and silent highways. The steering was found to be direct; the seats dampened bumps without deadening road feel among drivers. Over the decades, Mercury continued to juggle between price and polish with swing-axle wagons and smooth coupes. Cougar or Grand Marquis, the mood remained uncomplicated: easy handling, more comfortable interiors, no glitz. The legacy continues to roll even today in applied driveways although production ceased in the year 2011. Citizens are reminded more of the silent cabins than the badge. Any Mercury engine will have Timing Belt that is like a choreographer that matches the cam lobes to crank spins per turn. Timing Belt teeth do not stretch, hence the valve timing remains engaged even as the revs increase. Change the worn strip with tensioners and idler wheels and the new Timing Belt keeps engines going. Valves may meet pistons in a violent embrace which wrecks the party. Frequent inspections provide the owners of Mercury with a low-cost insurance cover against such anarchy. Nobody would mind paying a little cash to achieve solid power and carefree miles covered by a clean Timing Belt.

Mercury Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Ensure Proper Timing Belt Maintenance on a Mercury Villager?
    A:
Service and repair of the timing belt begins with draining the engine cooling system before professionals extract the crankshaft pulley and water pump pulley through bolt removal. Begin by taking out the six lower timing belt cover bolts before setting the vehicle on the floor. The service begins with loosening the clamp on the upper radiator hose followed by releasing the bolt to detach the hose before removing the coolant bypass hose by loosening the clamp. Access the A/C compressor idler pulley and bracket by removing their bolts and place the wire harness to the side after unclipping it. First disconnect the vacuum reservoir vacuum hose and then unclip and move the main wire harness before unclipping it once more to set aside. Detach the spark plug wire bracket when you move it aside by first unclipping the wire. Then remove the bolt from the spark plug wire. The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) breather hose requires the release of clamps before removing the bolt securing it and the tube. The first step requires the removal of seven bolts securing the upper timing belt cover to take it off together with the lower one. Position the number 1 piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) compression stroke before taking out both the outer timing belt guide and the timing belt by untightening the nut and tensioner. The new timing belt installation process requires you to point the arrow toward the exterior of the engine and position the three white marks on the belt respectively to camshaft and crankshaft sprocket marks while maintaining 40 teeth separation between left-hand and right-hand camshaft sprocket marks along with 43 teeth separation between the left-hand camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket. The camshaft timing marks should match positions with the seal plate and the crankshaft sprocket timing mark should correspond to the oil pump timing mark. Begin mounting the timing belt starting at the crankshaft sprocket and follow a counterclockwise direction to the camshaft sprockets without permitting belt slack. Prior to vehicle elevation install the timing belt on the tensioner while the marks remain aligned. Then raise the vehicle and install the crankshaft pulley bolt. The tensioner requires clockwise and counterclockwise motion at least twice before locking the tensioner nut and turning the crankshaft clockwise for two full turns to reach TDC with piston number one. Place force in the middle of the camshaft sprockets to measure their deflection. Begin by removing the crankshaft pulley bolt before lowering the vehicle in order to install outer timing belt guide along with upper timing belt cover by positioning the components correctly and securing them with seven upper timing belt cover bolts. Procure the PCV breather components to their original position before placing the clamps and installing the bolt. Reinstall the wire harness bracket after proper position and bolt installation followed by wire spark plug attachment to the bracket. The wire harness installation must be completed by bracket attachment followed by main harness bracket installation as well as vaccuum hose connection to the reservoir before placing the harness in its correct position. Position the A/C compressor idler pulley and bracket before securing all bolts for their installation. Bypass the coolant hose then place the clamps before attaching the upper radiator hose using clamps while installing the bolt. Users must raise the vehicle before securing the six lower timing belt cover bolts while proceeding with water pump pulley installation and its bolts until the crankshaft pulley gets installed then they can complete the engine cooling system procedure.
