Thermostat

Starting the repair process of the 2.3L engine thermostat and housing assembly requires hoisting the vehicle with neutral transmission while following these steps. Begin the service procedure by draining the cooling system followed by accession drive belt removal. The service requires you to disconnect both heater hose and lower radiator hose from the thermostat housing. The three housing bolts require removal together with the gasket so discard the old one. Use new thermostat housing gaskets while installing the new housing by tightening its bolts to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). To complete the procedure you need to perform cooling system filling and bleeding.

The service of the 3.0L (4V) engine thermostat requires placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL and securing it on a hoist. A proper draining of the cooling system needs to occur before you disconnect the upper radiator-to-thermostat housing hose and set it aside. Disassemble the thermostat housing by taking out its three bolts and removing the cover as well as the O-ring seal and the thermostat piece. The O-ring seal for replacement should be cleaned before inspection to determine whether a new one is needed. Clean engine coolant should be used to lubricate the O-ring seal of the thermostat before securing the bolts at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). After filling the cooling system reverse all removal steps to place the thermostat in position then perform a bleed procedure.

You must first put the vehicle into NEUTRAL gear then set it on a hoist for servicing the thermostat of a 3.0L engine. Remove the cooling system liquid then remove the upper radiator-to-thermostat housing hose for later safekeeping. The service begins by unscrewing the three bolts which fasten the thermostat housing cover then removing its O-ring seal and thermostat from the housing. You should inspect the O-ring seal while cleaning it before installing a new one if required. For installing the new thermostat you must first apply clean engine coolant to lubricate the O-ring seal before setting the bolts at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). To complete the service you must install the thermostat using the backward procedures and perform cooling system filling and bleeding steps.

Separate the thermostat housing, noting that the appearance cover is shown removed for clarity.

Ensure the bolts are tightened to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).

Remove the thermostat along with the O-ring seal.

Remove the accessory drive belt.
