Drain the lubricant from the differential housing cover first then progress to remove the rear brake drums before beginning. Discard the differential pinion shaft lock bolt and proceed to remove the pinion shaft. Regular care should be taken to safeguard the rubber O-rings in the axle shaft grooves as you push the axle shafts towards the inside while removing the U-washers. You must take the two axle shafts out of the vehicle while protecting the wheel bearing oil seal from damage. Then install the differential pinion shaft by fitting it to the lock bolt hole before securing it with a new bolt. The repair process concludes by first installing the rear brake drums followed by the differential housing cover and then filling the rear axle with 2.4 liters (5 pints) of SAE R0W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant XY-80W90-QL or an equivalent lubricant that satisfies Ford standards WSP-M2C197-A.
