- Q: How to service and repair the lower control arms on four-door on 2001 Ford Taurus?A: Before working with four-door vehicle lower control arms, put the car on flat ground to measure from the hub center to the fender lip while you take off the wheel cap. Now detach the tire and wheel unit. Start lower control arm front repairs by taking out the bolt and disconnecting the parking brake cable and optionally the rear anti-lock brake sensor wire. After detaching the lower control arm from the spindle take out the nut, washer and flag bolt then discard them. Unthread the nut and flag bolt from the front lower control arm before throwing away the mentioned components. Detach the rear lower control arm by removing its nut plus flag bolt. Keep the nut and flag bolt for disposal. Set each lower control arm in place by placing upper edges downward and keep the stamped "BOTTOM" mark on the base part. Position the back control arm with flanges showing to the front while installing front control arms with flanges facing to the back. Place the rear lower suspension arm correctly and apply a new flag bolt and nut but leave them loose. Place the front lower control arm on its adjusting cam and fasten the new flag bolt with a new nut. Place the suspension arm correctly and put on both new flag bolt and nut, washer, and adjustment cam in neutral position. Set the raised suspension on a jack stand until the hub center matches the fender lip distance and tighten all nuts. Lower the suspension and take off the jack stand before connecting the rear brake anti-lock sensor wire harness as well as parking brake cable and positioning the bolt on properly. Reinstall the tire and wheel set before inspecting wheel alignment and making needed adjustments.
