- Q: How to Service and Repair the Power Steering Hose from Pump to Steering Gear on 2005 Ford Escape?A: Service and repair of the power steering pump to steering gear pressure line will begin with the vehicle in neutral position on a hoist. The service requires draining power steering fluid into a suitable pan followed by removing the pressure line fitting retaining nut to be tightened at 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.) for 2.3L engines or 73 Nm (54 ft. lbs.) for 3.0L (4V) engines during installation. Proceed by unbolting the power steering pressure line bracket nut with a torque of 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) for the 2.3L while using 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.) for the 3.0L (4V) engine. When working on the 3.0L (4V) engine users must disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector. The power steering pressure line bracket-to-steering gear bolt needs removal for which a torque of 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) is required after reinstalling. To complete this part of the installation open the clamp plate bolt which will need a torque setting of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) during closing. The diameter of power steering lines differs so their corresponding O-rings cannot be exchanged between each other. The clamp plate requires rotation to get rid of the power steering pump-to-steering gear pressure line before installing a new high-pressure line O-ring. Finish the repair by putting back the original parts before conducting a power steering system filling procedure which should include fresh O-rings for every time the steering gear lines are detached.
