2005 Mercury Mountaineer Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the rear shock absorber and spring assembly on 2005 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: You should start servicing the rear shock absorber and spring assembly by taking off both components of wheel and tire. The next step requires discarding and replacing all three shock absorber upper mounting plate-to-frame nuts with fresh parts while applying torque of 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). The jounce bumper should be removed first and then the stabilizer link grommet followed by the stabilizer link stud which needs to be reinstalled and fastened to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs. torque). Use a new lower arm-to-wheel knuckle nut by tightening it to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.). The shock absorber-to-lower arm bolt retention must wait until the vehicle rests on its wheels and tires before final tightening to 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.). The flag nut of the shock absorber-to-lower arm needs disposal while extracting the shock absorber along with its spring assembly. When installing reverse the whole procedure using new components for shock absorber upper mounting plate-to-frame nuts and lower arm-to-wheel knuckle bolt and shock absorber-to-lower arm flag nut.
