2006 Ford F-150 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the In-Line Automatic Transmission Filter with an OTA Cooler on 2006 Ford F-150?
A: Start the transmission fluid in-line filter with OTA cooler service and repair operations by placing the vehicle in neutral position on a hoist. The installation of a new in-line fluid filter becomes necessary when the transmission received an overhaul and previously came equipped with such a filter. The absence of an in-line filter requires a new filter kit installation. Non-internal repairs require the omission of both in-line filters and filter kits. Utilize the in-line transmission fluid filter that was supplied when replacing a new or Ford authorized remanufactured transmission unit. Safely remove both bolts and skid plate before cutting the rubber hose section and steel line to clean their exposed ends. Seat the cooler tube entirely into the fitting before completing finger tightness of the ferrule nut followed by an additional 1-1/2 turns. The filter requires installation in the fluid cooler return line with the red arrow directed for fluid flow moving away from the transmission fluid cooler toward the transmission to protect transmission internals. The filter installation should avoid using rubber hoses or steel tubing when the tubing makes a 60-degree or larger bend toward the filter. A proper length of hose should be used for filter installation and hose clamps should be tightened. Cut a section on the transmission fluid pan clean and apply stickers to it. Reinstall both the skid plate together with the bolts if your transmission includes this component. Complete the transmission filling process by using new automatic transmission fluid then check for proper operation followed by inspecting the filter for any signs of leakage.
