2005 Ford F-150 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the In-Line Automatic Transmission Filter on 2005 Ford F-150?
A: Start transmission fluid in-line filter service by checking whether the vehicle received an in-line fluid filter after its transmission overhaul because new installation will involve a clean filter. A new in-line fluid filter kit needs installation when the vehicle does not have existing in-line fluid filtration system. The installation of in-line filters and filter kits should be excluded during non-internal repairs. A new or Ford-authorized remanufactured transmission should be equipped with the in-line transmission fluid filter that comes with the installation. The first step should position the vehicle in neutral configuration on a hoist. Remove skid plate bolts from the vehicle before removing both hose and line section while cleaning and de-burring the steel line end. Seating the cooler tube inside the fitting completely must be verified before applying torque using the ferrule nut. Place the tubing ferrule hose assembly connector on the steel fluid cooler tube and start the ferrule nut with finger strength before tightening it another 1.5 turns. The filter requires correct installation in the transmission fluid cooler return line so it functions properly by showing fluid flow direction away from the cooler toward the transmission to avoid damage. The filter installation process requires no rubber hose or steel tubing to have bends exceeding 60 degrees at the entrance point. The installation requires a proper hose length to fit the filter which needs tight clamping. The cooler tubes require installation of one cooler tube retainer followed by securing the cooler tubes with a tie strap if needed. After cleaning one section of the transmission fluid pan install the provided sticker. The procedure ends with transmission filling using new automatic transmission fluid while checking system functioning and inspecting the filter for leakage.
