2008 Ford Ranger Steering Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Steering Shaft on 2008 Ford Ranger?
A: The first step in servicing or repairing the steering column shaft requires stationary position of the vehicle in neutral gear on a hoist. Avoid turning the steering column by disconnecting the steering column shaft to protect the Clock Spring's condition; the Clock Spring needs replacement if steering column rotation happens. First remove the lower steering column shaft-to-upper steering column shaft bolt and discard it before folding the lower steering column shaft. When reinstalling this connection apply torque until the value reaches 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). The upper steering column shaft extraction begins with removing its bolt and continues by removing the shaft itself which requires discarding the bolt. You should tighten the connection between these steering column components to 27 Nm (20 lb-ft). The following step entails taking out the lower steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt before extracting the lower steering column shaft which must be discarded along with the bolt. The torque specification for tightening the lower shaft when reinstalling should be 55 Nm (41 lb-ft). The installation of both upper and lower shafts will be finished by performing the reverse steps of removal.
