2008 Lincoln Navigator Vapor Canister Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Should the Vapor Canister Be Serviced to Ensure Safety and Proper Installation on 2008 Lincoln Navigator?
A: The service of evaporative emission (EVAP) canister requires disconnecting the battery ground cable primarily for safety against fire risks and explosive conditions from fuel vapor. Keep all smoking activities as well as open flames away from components that relate to fuel. EVAP canister vent solenoid functions together with its dust separator as one unit. The vehicle should be placed in NEUTRAL position on a hoist before starting the work. Start by disconnecting the wiring harness of the EVAP canister vent solenoid electrical jumper then remove the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor and vapor tube assembly from the EVAP canister quick connect coupling followed by the EVAP canister purge valve vapor tube from the EVAP canister quick connect coupling and the fresh air tube from the canister vent solenoid and dust separator assembly quick connect coupling. Use 20 Nm torque (15 lb-ft) to tighten the EVAP canister assembly bracket-to-frame rail bolts before their removal from the rear and front positions. Remove first the EVAP canister assembly bracket before removing the exhaust Y-pipe dual catalytic converter heat shield-to-transmission crossmember bolt while tightening both to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). Clear the EVAP canister vent solenoid electrical connector and then loosen the EVAP canister-to-EVAP canister assembly bracket bolts but tighten them to 6 Nm (53 lb-in). Remove the EVAP canister from its bracket while breaking the canister vent solenoid connection and dust separator apart from the EVAP canister. The replacement process includes testing for leakages and executing an evaporative emissions repair verification drive cycle after following the installation procedure in reverse order.
