2009 Ford F-150 Camshaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the RH camshaft on 2009 Ford F-150?
A: The first step to remove and replace the RH camshaft requires positioning the crankshaft damper spoke at the 12 o'clock point while the timing mark indentation needs to be at the 1 o'clock position. Remove the RH valve cover. Starting by backfeeding the bolt on the RH camshaft phaser and sprocket one complete turn the technician will disconnect the RH Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector followed by removing this sensor. The No. 1 cylinder exhaust cam lobe must be positioned on the exhaust stroke before continuing which may need an extra crankshaft rotation to reach 12 o'clock position. The installation requires the three designated camshaft roller followers to be removed while maintaining logs of their initial locations for engine protection purposes. Make use of a Valve Spring Compressor to take off the followers while maintaining the valve keepers firmly attached to their positions. The crankshaft requires clockwise rotation so that both the crankshaft damper spoke points to 6 o'clock while the timing mark indentation shows at 7 o'clock. The Timing Chain Locking Tool square must be positioned between the timing chain and engine block for the duration of assembly work. You should first extract the front thrust camshaft bearing cap straight upward before removing the rest of the bearing caps according to sequence for cleaning and damage assessment. The mechanic should disassemble the camshaft phaser and sprocket while discarding its bolt and washer to access the camshaft for inspection along with checking the phaser and sprocket for any signs of damage. Start by applying clean engine oil to both the camshaft and journals followed by camshaft installation when roller followers should stay in their position. Place the timing chain directly on top of marks scribed to the camshaft phaser and sprocket before adding the assembly onto the camshaft through installation of a new bolt starting at finger-tightness. The engine oil lubricated bearing caps should be placed back in their correct locations before tightening the bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) in sequential order. Use the crankshaft to make a half-turn in the counterclockwise direction before checking the correct camshaft alignment. Install the three camshaft roller followers with the Valve Spring Compressor installed and then add the CMP sensor together with its bolt. Tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) before joining the CMP electrical connector. The new phaser bolt and sprocket should be tightened incrementally at 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) followed by 90 degrees to complete the reinstallation of the right-hand valve cover.
