    A: The first step to service or repair the steering column shaft on F350/450 models (including F450/550 versions) should start with the vehicle in NEUTRAL position on a hoist. You should use the Hunter(R) 28-75-1 device to retain the steering wheel in its straight-ahead position. During installation of the new bolt replace the upper steering column shaft-to-steering column bolt by tightening it to 28 Nm so it reaches 21 lb-ft torque. The avoidance of steering column shaft rotation when disconnecting the intermediate shaft is necessary to protect the Clock Spring which needs to be removed before recentering when any such rotation happens. First position the steering wheel directly forward and take out the key before disconnecting the steering column shaft from its position above the steering column. The new bolt which replaces the discarded upper steering column shaft-to-lower steering column shaft should be tightened to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). The upper steering column shaft should be taken out of the passenger compartment before beginning to break apart the steering gear shield from the steering gear housing unit. The installation requires the new bolt to be tightened to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) when installing it in place of the lower steering column shaft-to-steering gear bolt. The installation procedure ends when you remove the steering column shaft followed by reducing its escalation method.
