All air filter cover assemblies must be installed correctly or engine damage could occur. If the vehicle is driven in dust, the filter should be checked every 3,000 miles and replaced if it's dirty, with a minimum replacement interval of every 30,000 miles regardless of its appearance. For 1993 and 1994 models, disconnect the PCV hose from the air outlet tube, then disconnect the air outlet tube from the air cleaner cover, followed by the electrical connector from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Label and disconnect the vacuum lines at the rear of the cover, loosen the clamp, and disconnect the air outlet tube and hose. Unplug the electrical connector for the MAF sensor, remove the cover retaining screws, and slide the cover out of the retaining tab slots. Lift the element out of the housing, wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean cloth, place the new air filter element in the housing with the marked side facing up, reinstall the cover, and secure the screws. Finally, connect the electrical connector, vacuum lines, air outlet tube, and PCV hose. For 1995 through 1999 models, unsnap the cover retaining clip, detach the cover, and pull out the element. Wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing, place the new air filter element in the housing, and secure the cover with the clip. For 2000 and later models, loosen the hose clamp on the air intake duct after the MAF sensor, disconnect the MAF sensor electrical connector if necessary, release the two locking clips on the cover, and lift off the cover while separating it from the air intake duct. Remove the air filter element by lifting it out from one edge, wipe the inside of the air filter housing, place the new air filter element in the housing, reinstall the cover, and reconnect the air intake duct, ensuring the tabs on one side of the cover are noted. Press down on the cover to engage the locking clips or secure the clamps, and reconnect the MAF sensor if necessary, carefully tightening the hose clamp on the air intake duct.
