    A: The Dana 60 and 70 pinion gear service requires a new pinion shaft oil slinger when bending or mutilation occurs so that the replacement can be installed. Both components of the differential ring gear and pinion system must receive matching numbers before installation which can be inspected by comparing etched figures on these components. The gear contact pattern method should validate the final pinion position on the "button" end of the pinion where etched figures are displayed. Each pinion button shows a zero (0) and either a plus (+) or minus (-) followed by a number to indicate its ideal differential ring gear position for running. The correct dimension of the Model 60/70 axles can be adjusted through shimming behind the inner pinion bearing. To preserve the original differential ring gear and pinion the technician should measure the present position shim thickness and select an identical new shim. Drive pinion position shims come in three thicknesses which include 0.08, 0.13, and 0.25 mm (0.003, 0.005, and 0.010 inch) and their measurement must be done using a micrometer. The installation of a new differential ring gear with pinion requires a shim thickness adjustment based on the comparison of etchings between old and new pinion components. Drive pinions that show m+8 (+3) require 0.08 mm (0.003 inch) fewer shims compared to unetched pins therefore the selected drive pinion position shim needs adjustment downward by this amount. The pinion etched m-8 (-3) will need a 0.08 mm (0.003 inch) increase in shim thickness to meet the proper mounting distance because of the etched value.
