The management of asbestos fibers during brake shoe servicing and repair operations must be performed with maximum safety because inhalation of these fibers could prove dangerous. The designated asbestos-capable vacuum cleaner should be used or wet cleaning can replace it if no appropriate vacuum system is available. Any technician working in dusty areas must always wear properly approved respiratory protection devices while the generation zones of asbestos dust need closure and warning signs must be displayed. The replacement of rear brake shoes and linings for both axle sides should be conducted to avoid uneven brake performance. Technicians should start by removing the
Brake Drum they need to carefully check the rear brake assembly for unwanted leakage from the rear
Wheel Cylinder while also checking for any visible contaminants in the brake shoes and linings and examining their minimum thickness above the backing plate or rivets and heat discoloration in the springs. The brake shoe retracting spring needs to be removed before you disconnect the parking brake lever by taking out the bolt lock nut and bolt while you detach the parking brake rear cable and conduit. The first step is to take out the parking brake lever and after that the adjusting screw assembly requires performing three steps: release the brake shoe adjusting lever cable, dismantle the cable guide and extract the adjusting lever return spring and brake shoe adjusting lever. Start by removing the brake shoe adjusting screw spring along with the brake adjuster screw assembly after which you can extract the rear brake shoe and lining through the process of removing the anchor pin guide plate followed by the hold-down springs and pins. To install the rear brake shoes require application of Silicone Brake Caliper Grease D7AZ-19A331-A (Motorcraft WA-10) or equivalent silicone compound which meets Ford specification ESL-M1C171-A on
Brake Backing Plate friction points. Subsequently position the rear brake shoes followed by installing their linings and hold-down spring pins and springs and the anchor pin guide plate. Place the brake adjuster screw assembly together with the same silicone grease before installing it into the brake shoe adjusting screw nut while leaving this screw loose by half a turn. After proper positioning of the adjusting lever cable and guide, install the brake adjuster screw assembly before validating the auto self-adjuster by inspecting brake shoe adjuster assembly rotation through cable pulling. For the installation conclude with securing the parking brake lever and cord followed by attaching the rear cable through conduit while fastening the lever with a bolt then nut. Next install the brake shoe retracting spring and perform brake adjustments before putting back the brake drum.
