Ford Freestar A/C Accumulator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service the A/C Accumulator in the HVAC System on Ford Freestar?
    A:
Refrigerant recovery should be the first step before servicing the suction accumulator within the HVAC system. After discarding the two A/C fitting nuts along with their O-ring seals you should apply 8 Nm (71 lb-in) torque when installing new nuts. The suction accumulator service begins with disconnecting the A/C cycling switch electrical connector before removing the three suction accumulator bolts to extract the suction accumulator assembly. The service procedure requires reversing these removal steps combined with fresh O-ring installation and correct PAG oil application for the refrigerant system. The refrigerant system must finish the procedure by evacuating then performing leak tests followed by charging the system. A replacement suction accumulator needs to be installed only when system contamination appears from a failed A/C compressor or injuries become evident in the existing accumulator. Refrigerant compressor oil (mineral oil) serves a specific purpose to lubricate R-134a refrigerant system O-ring seals while it should never be added to the R-134a refrigerant system as an A/C compressor lubricant.
