Removal of the tailgate access panel requires bolt removal according to bed type whether it is seven bolts for flare-side or eight bolts for models without steps or thirteen bolts for step-equipped models before securing all bolts to 5 Nm (44 lb-in). The next step involved removing two nuts that hold the tailgate handle and on completion the nuts require tightening to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). To install the tailgate handle properly replace it by executing the reverse steps of removal.
