Mercury Camshaft works valve timing to increase power without making fuel consumption unpleasantly high. Mercury came in 1939 with a car that rode better than its competitors, had a stylish look, and guaranteed driver confidence to ordinary people who wanted more than bare minimum. The name, which was borrowed after the Roman messenger of the fleet, kept Mercury by the lips and suggested gay roadside manners without any boasting. Soon showrooms stocked mid-sized sedans and coupes whose cavernous cabins, plush insulation, and plush suspensions enabled Mercury to provide hush, comfort, and control over long journeys. Mercury continued to perfect dashboards, seats, and steering feel through decades of Cougars, Grand Marquises, and other head-turners to occupy that middle ground of flair and value until the closing shop in 2011. The timing of the intake and exhaust is controlled by Camshaft and determines the amount of air that will be inhaled by the engine and the efficiency with which the engine will burn fuel. A robust iron or steel frame enables the Camshaft to shake off the long highway wiggles as well as the abrupt throttle jerks. Various lift, length, and lobe separation possibilities imply that a Camshaft can bias an engine to either fast low-rpm punch or relaxed cruise efficiency. The Camshaft synchronizes the action of the valve to exceptionally low levels, enhancing throttle response, reducing waste, and keeping the car reliable mile after mile.

Mercury Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove camshafts and related components in V6 engine on Mercury Mariner?
    A:
If only the camshafts of the rear bank cylinder head are to be removed, then only the rear timing chain has to be taken off, whereas if the front bank cylinder head camshafts are also being taken off then both chains running the front bank have to be taken off. Pay attention to the position of each camshaft cap and use a marker or note them so that you don't confuse them. As a rule, start unscrewing the bolts which secure the camshaft bearing caps, in the prescribed order and if needed apply a gentle blow with a hammer on the caps. The caps must be placed back in the position they were before; it's also recommended to assemble all the parts of one particular camshaft. There is a locating tab on the intake and exhaust camshafts, ensure you mark the position on the cylinder head if they get misplaced then use the following steps to remove them: Locate the positions of the rocker arms prior to removal and set them in aorgans of identification preferably a tray. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters from their bores and sort them as to how they will be repositioned on the engine. For the front bank camshafts, rotate the crankshaft until the keyway is at the 11 o'clock position and then remove the front timing chain and then again camshafts, rocker arms, lash adjuster and make sure that the bearing cap has been loosen at the right sequence. For 2009 and later models, take off variable camshaft timing solenoid and camshaft position sensor, next lift the vehicle to take off the right front wheel and inner fender splash shield. Turn the engine with the rear camshafts to the top dead center position, in such a way that puts a locking tool on the timing chain, and place reference mark on the timing chain itself and the sprocket while the engine has to face up. Disconnect and take off the intake and exhaust camshaft bearing caps in proper order and also take off the camshafts. Rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters should be lubricated and then be placed back to where they came from, and the camshaft bearing caps and the thrust caps should be torqued according to a sequence. After tightening all the screws or bolts place them in their respective positions, reverse the process of removing and finally release the locking tool. Last, look for a leak and verify it the Powertrain Control Module relearns its over idle and fuel trim strategy.
