Lincoln Navigator Vehicle Speed Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Vehicle Speed Sensor on the 4R100 Automatic Transmission on Lincoln Navigator?
A: The correct procedure for servicing the Transmission Speed Sensor of the 4R100 Automatic Transmission begins by first putting the vehicle into NEUTRAL mode before securing it on a hoist. The 4x2 Navigator requires the removal of its bolts then its dampening component. Starting with transmission insulator-to-crossmember support nuts removal you should proceed to the left-hand and right-hand heat shield-to-crossmember bolts before finishing with nuts removal. Use an appropriate high-lift transmission jack to support the transmission before uninstalling both components and their bolts from the crossmember. Lower the transmission's rear end before accessing the sensors where you need to disconnect the electrical connection of the affected sensor. Follow proper contamination prevention measures while removing the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor by firstly unbolting it and subsequently removing the sensor. The procedure also includes the removal of Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor after uninstalling its bolt. Before installing the OSS begin by applying lubricant on the O-ring followed by bolt attachment. Reconnect the H02S sensor to its position and apply lubrication to the TSS O-ring when the TSS removal occurred before installing with its bolt. The electrical connector should be reattached to the sensor followed by reinstalling the transmission mount crossmember with one nut keeping it secure during the transmission height adjustment process to align bolt holes. Secure the crossmember bolts before tightening the remaining nut and both nuts. Left-hand heat shield-to-crossmember bolts need to be reinstalled while the Navigator 4x2 requires reinstallation of the dampener together with its bolts. Finish by taking out the high-lift transmission jack then lower the vehicle.
