Spark Plug

Vehicle owners should start ignition coil-on-plug removal before servicing 5.4L (3V) or 6.8L (3V) engine spark plugs. The correct procedure requires engine temperature control to be warm to touch after cooling before attempting any spark plug service to prevent damage to threads or the cylinder head. Hand tools should be the only tools used for both removing and installing spark plugs due to their ability to protect the cylinder head and spark plug from damage. The first step in removal involves cleaning foreign material from the spark plug well with compressed air. When using original spark plugs once again they should return to their original cylinder installation position while new spark plugs can be inserted anywhere. Early build vehicles require spark plugs to be tightened to 34 Nm (25 lb-ft) yet late build vehicles need them tightened to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). The spark plug gap remains unadjustable thus requiring replacement of the spark plug with new ones when out of specification. The inspection should be followed by new spark plug installations according to the reverse order of the removal process.

Only hand tools should be used to avoid damaging the cylinder head or the spark plugs.

Inspect them and install new ones as necessary, reversing the removal procedure for installation.
