2005 Ford Focus Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How Should the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Be Properly Depowered Before Servicing on 2005 Ford Focus?
A: Safety glasses serve as a necessary safety equipment for depowering Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before service without any risk of accidental air bag deployment. The connectors linking the air bag module to the pretensioner should never be probed because it could cause deployment of the air bag which results in personal injuries. The Supplemental Restraint System must be put into depowered mode before servicing a seat that contains an SRS component. The air bag warning lamp maintains a continuous state when the RCM fuse F2.60 (7.5A) is extracted during the ON ignition phase as a sign of proper functionality. First activate the control to shut down all vehicle accessories and ignition processes. You need to remove the central junction box (CJB) lid that sits on the left instrument panel side followed by pulling out the RCM fuse F2.60. The air bag indicator should stay lit for at least thirty seconds while the ignition is ON. Check the fuse removal when the air bag indicator does not light up. Begin by disconnecting the ground cable of battery (14301) when the ignition is OFF and waiting one minute to drain back up power along with any auxiliary batteries. Repowering begins with turning off then on the ignition switch followed by return of RCM fuse F2.60 then reattaching the housing cover. Reconnect the battery ground cable only after verifying that there are no occupants in the vehicle and nothing encloses the air bag modules. The SRS verification process requires a procedure of turning the ignition to OFF and waiting ten seconds before returning it to ON. The air bag indicator keeps its light illuminated continuously for six seconds prior to shutting off. The indicator light should first illuminate then stay on for six seconds before turning off. A fault must exist when the light fails to turn on, stays on or flashes five times per second. It requires thirty seconds for the indicator to activate after turning the ignition to ON because the RCM conducts SRS tests. The vehicle produces a chime consisting of five sets of five beeps when the indicator fails to work due to an existing SRS fault that requires diagnosis and SRS system fix. Clear out all ongoing DTCs that the RCM shows through a scan tool since you release the vehicle.
