Speed Sensor

A hoisted vehicle allows access to both the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) Sensor and Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor through removal of rear transmission mount nuts. Set a high lift transmission jack under the transmission following correct placement to prevent damage from occurring to the TSS and OSS sensors. The mechanic should first detach the rear transmission mount before lifting the transmission to remove the bolts holding it to the rear crossmember support. The TSS and OSS sensors need to be accessible by lowering the transmission. You can remove the TSS sensor by first removing its attached bolt and next the sensor itself. When removing the OSS sensor follow the same procedure of sensor bolt removal before taking out the sensor itself. When installing the OSS sensor first apply lubrication then place it in position and fasten it with the bolt. First apply lubrication to the TSS sensor before installing it with its bolt. Keep the transmission back at a safe height because damaging the sensors will occur. The installation of the rear transmission mount begins with raising and bolting it before placing the transmission on the rear crossmember support. You should complete the job by reinstalling the rear transmission mount nuts and letting the vehicle descend to the ground.

Service of the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor must begin with placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position and hoisting it up. After disconnecting the OSS sensor the work area surrounding it should remain empty to stop contamination from reaching the transmission components. First disconnect the bolt present on the OSS sensor before you remove the sensor from its place. Apply lubrication to the TSS sensor before installing it followed by using its installation bolt. Avoid increasing the transmission back height because sensor damage could occur. The rear transmission mount should be mounted by using a transmission-lifting process followed by bolt attachment and finally lowering the transmission onto the rear crossmember support. Complete installation of rear transmission mount nuts and carefully lower down the car.

You must raise the 5R55E vehicle before starting the Transmission Speed Sensor service. The service of the 5R55E requires disconnecting the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector while removing the OSS sensor by uninstalling its OSS sensor screw followed by sensor extraction from the transmission. Ascertain whether the OSS sensor O-ring displays signs of damage before deciding to replace it with a new one. Petroleum jelly should be used to lubricate the new O-ring before putting the OSS sensor back into the transmission. Remove the two wire harness retainers and move the wire harness aside.

Secure the sensor by installing the bolt and then reconnect the electrical connector for the OSS sensor.

By installing it and securing it with the bolt.

Lubricate and install the OSS sensor, securing it with its bolt.

Reinstall the wire harness and secure it with the two retaining clips at the rear of the crossmember.

Ensure the vehicle is in NEUTRAL and positioned on a hoist.

Disconnect the electrical connector for the OSS or TSS sensor.

Remove the front output shaft speed sensor by first removing the bolt securing it.
