Mercury Pilot Bearing is a small bearing made of steel that is mounted in the crankshaft end which ensures that the transmission input shaft has been centered and smooth when the clutch is engaging. Mercury was born in 1938 and had cut a niche in midsize cars that dampened bumps but still steered on purpose, making daily drives feel like a relaxing beat. Plush cabins engulfed the passengers with sound insulation, road rumble remained outside, and broad seats allowed stretching long legs. Showrooms propounded fashion lines that were not wallet emptying, and suspensions that were firm cornering and cloud-like ride so the family had confidence when they hit the potholes in the city or sweepers on the highway. Mercury classics such as Cougar and Grand Marquis proved that the badge could combine flair and reasonable prices and even as the years passed by, Mercury continued to add extra insulation, smarter gauges and weight balance. By the time production ceased in 2011, Mercury had created a reputation of easy comfort and parts that are still readily available. When replacing a Pilot Bearing, unhook the battery, position the brake and place the car on stands. Pull driveshaft and transmission to reveal the clutch. The crank has unbolt pressure plate, slide out disc, and the old Pilot Bearing. Install a puller and straighten it, then wipe the bore using solvent. Apply a dab of light oil on the new Pilot Bearing and tap square. Turn it by hand, clean excess oil, put disc, plate, transmission back, drop car, reconnect battery, start engine and hear smooth engagement of clutch.
