How to replace Vehicle Speed Sensor on Mercury Mariner?

This procedure applies only in the models with a manual transaxle. Starting where you left off, start by unplug the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Note: for 2002 models, the 4WD models require the VSS to be accessed from underneath and thus the vehicle should be raised and supported on jackstands. Position the VSS on top of the rear part of the transaxle, near the inner CV joints and then remove the VSS electrical connector. Thereafter, it is necessary to take out the VSS hold-down bolt and get rid of the VSS in order to pull it out. This step is the other way round of removal whereby the VSS hold-down bolt is tightened to its recommended torque. The PCM has lost its learned state over idle and the fuel trim, and thus needs to relearn itself after reconnecting the battery.
