How can broken valve springs and defective valve stem seals be replaced without removing the cylinder heads in 4.0L pushrod V6 engine on 2000-2011 Ford Ranger?

Valve springs tend to break due to wear and tear or the valve stem seal turns out to be substandard, and these two can be changed without having to remove the cylinder heads, provided by two special tools and a source of compressed air. It is more preferable though if compressed air can still be used; in the absence of which a nylon rope can be threaded in order not to let the valves go all the way to the cylinder. In the first step, start by eliminating the valve cover of the cylinder head of the affected side and in case one is replacing all the stem seals, one must eliminate both covers. Subsequently, the spark plug from the cylinder with the defective part should be extracted and, if replacing all seals, all spark plugs should be removed. Get the crankshaft in-line with the piston of the ailing cylinder on the compression stroke at TDC; do this beginning with cylinder number one and to the firing order. Insert an adapter to the spark plug hole and fit an air hose from a compressed air source. In case of using compressed air it will be dangerous because it leads to the forcing of the piston downwards with sharp rotation of the crankshaft. It was essential that the air pressure should retain the valves in the respective positions. If compressed air is not available place the piston 45 degrees before TDC on the compression stroke and insert a long nylon rope through the spark plug hole and turn the crankshaft until slight resistance is felt. To avoid dropping some parts into the engine, put several shop rags into the cylinder head hole above and below the valves, with a valve spring compressor place on the spring to compress the keepers and remove them. There are some variations of tools used to compress the valve springs with head in position among them. Following the removal of the spring retainer and the valve spring, then the valve stem seal should be taken off. In case the pressure of air does not close the valve, the face or seat of the valve is bound to be harmed and this requires the head of the cylinder to be withdrawn for repair work. Place a rubber band or even a tape around the top part of the valve stem to ensure that it does not drop in the combustion chamber and then hear off the air pressure. Check the valve stem for any signs of damage, including its ability to move in and out without binding in the guide. Push air pressure to maintain the valve closed again, then you should untie the tape or rubber band. Using the engine oil, grease the valve stem, after that screw a new stem seal to the correct standard depth or use a tap to knock it in. Fit the valve spring over the valve and on top of the valve spring retainer compress the spring to position the valve spring keepers and apply some greasy to secure the same. Dismiss the pressure on the spring tool and make sure that the keepers are in their rightful positions. Remove the air hose and pull the adapter off of the spark plug hole in case you used the rope. Last, fit the rocker arm assembly and spark plugs then the wires, valve covers, and at last start the engine and check for oil leakage and any kind of unusual sounds emanating from the valve cover region.

There are some variations of tools used to compress the valve springs with head in position among them. Following the removal of the spring retainer and the valve spring, then the valve stem seal should be taken off. In case the pressure of air does not close the valve, the face or seat of the valve is bound to be harmed and this requires the head of the cylinder to be withdrawn for repair work. Place a rubber band or even a tape around the top part of the valve stem to ensure that it does not drop in the combustion chamber and then hear off the air pressure. Check the valve stem for any signs of damage, including its ability to move in and out without binding in the guide. Push air pressure to maintain the valve closed again, then you should untie the tape or rubber band. Using the engine oil, grease the valve stem, after that screw a new stem seal to the correct standard depth or use a tap to knock it in. Fit the valve spring over the valve and on top of the valve spring retainer compress the spring to position the valve spring keepers and apply some greasy to secure the same. Dismiss the pressure on the spring tool and make sure that the keepers are in their rightful positions. Remove the air hose and pull the adapter off of the spark plug hole in case you used the rope. Last, fit the rocker arm assembly and spark plugs then the wires, valve covers, and at last start the engine and check for oil leakage and any kind of unusual sounds emanating from the valve cover region.
