How to service the fuel filler hose on Mercury Cougar?

To service the fuel filler hose, loosen the right rear wheel nuts, lift the vehicle and remove the fuel tank filler cap. Take off the wheel, fender splash shield and the fuel tank. De-fuel the fuel vapor pipe and take out the fuel filler pipe. Re-follow the steps to installation, taking care of safety measures.

Notice no-smoking/open-flame precautions; cap/tape fuel openings, remove prior to installation. Vehicle neutral on hoist; disconnect battery. Open filler cap; take off 3 bolts (replace 2 Nm/18 lb-in). Early: twist/pull vapor tube. Late: depress 2 tabs to release. Disconnect hoses/fittings, loosen clamp, remove two bolts (20 Nm/15 lb-ft). Reinstall by reversal.
