- Q: How to remove the starter motor on Mercury Mariner?A:For the models to 2008, first of all, you need to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and then unscrew the three bolts of the starter motor mount. Lift the front of the vehicle and place it on jackstand and then proceed to take the bolts on the support bracket for intermediate shaft centre bearing. It is not necessary to come off the right drive axle or the intermediate shaft, but to come off the middle support of the bearing bracket will give enough room to get the starter out. Next, remove the large battery cable off the starter motor and, the starter control electrical connector off the solenoid terminals before taking out the starter. For V6 models, additionally, the air intake duct and the air filter housing with the Mass Air Flow sensor as a single assembly, the cooling system should be drained and the hoses should be disconnected above the starter motor to be removed. Having disconnected the battery cable and the starter control electrical connector, unscrew the starter motor mounting bolts and remove the starter. Do this especially for cars manufactured 2009 and above, remove the negative battery terminal cable, then tightn the vehicle above the ground on jack stands, and lastly remove the right front fender splash shield. Remove the wiring harness connections from the starter, and remove the ground wire, then, finally, the two bolts and lower the starter motor out of the engine compartment. For V6 models unscrew the transaxle above by removing wires harnesses and ground wire, next unscrew the two vertical screws and pull the starter motor off the transaxle. They are simply the reverse of one another and after reconnecting the battery the Powertrain Control Module has to learn its idle and fuel trim strategy all over again.
