Mercury Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable and Bracket for a Column Shift on Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: Beginning the process of servicing or repairing the shift cable and bracket of a column shift vehicle requires disabling electrical power to the air suspension system to avoid unintended air spring changes that might shift the car during work leading to severe injuries. You should operate the air suspension switch and set it to OFF mode when it exists in your vehicle. The service necessitates lifting the vehicle into NEUTRAL position to disconnect the shift cable starting with the manual control lever followed by the cable bracket. First disconnect the shift cable retainer before unclipping the cable from its upward-positioned engine compartment clips. Then remove the bolts which secure the transmission bracket and discard the shift cable retainer once more. The shift cable requires removal from its bulkhead clip before the operator detaches it from the steering column framework by detaching it from both the transmission shift lever arm and support components and the steering column bracket. Repeat the discarding of the retainer. Push the rubber grommet from the engine area through the bulkhead and take out the shift cable from the passenger side. Place the new shift cable through the bulkhead opening which leads to the transmission while making sure the rubber grommet seats correctly. Use a tool to lock the shift cable locking tabs before fitting the end of the cable onto the ball stud and pushing it into the bracket. Verify the lock by pulling on the cable. The shift cable needs installation at both the steering column as well as the transmission shift lever arm and support while using a new retainer between these two connections. Step one involves placing the shift lever at position (D) before adding a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight to it. Secure the shift cable to the bulkhead routing clip then position the shift cable bracket and tighten all bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). The cable locking tabs must be secured and the cable end needs to be correctly mounted on the ball stud. Before attachment to the manual control lever we must first connect the shift cable to the shift cable bracket. A new shift cable retainer should be installed to enable cable connection with shift cable bracket before attaching it to both upward clips in the engine compartment. Use necessary adjustments to modify the shift cable. Follow all safety warnings to repower the fire suppression system in vehicles where such systems are present. When the vehicle settles on the ground after all adjustments are finished, it is time to turn on electrical power to the air suspension system if it is present.
  • Q: How to service and repair the gearshift cables on Mercury Mariner?
A: The service process for gearshift cables requires a removal of the restraints control module (RCM) and floor console. Handle each gearshift cable with the same method while disconnecting them from the transmission. Break the two gearshift cable clips from the bracket then extract the cables from their connection to the transaxle gearshift control assembly. You must firstly disconnect the gearshift cables from their attachment to the gearshift lever and then eliminate the two grommet nuts of the gearshift cables before taking out the gearshift cables. To install the gearshift cables feed them through the dash panel using proper direction of the arrow on the grommet which should face downwards. Mount the select cable together with the gearshift cable followed by attachment of the two gearshift cable grommet nuts at 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). Place the cable adapter clips entirely into position before you install the two gearshift cable retaining clips. The task requires installing the floor console and RCM after cable adjustment of the transaxle gearshift control assembly connection.
  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on Mercury Mountaineer?
A: You need to start repairing the shift cable after putting your vehicle in NEUTRAL position on a hoist. The selector lever needs to be in the PARK position before you remove the center console left side panel and separate its connection points between the selector lever and the selector lever housing through the floorpan by pulling out the cable along with its grommet. The servicing process for vehicles with 6R60 transmission begins by removing the cable shield by prying from the boot's nearest point then sliding it away and unlocking the lock tab and disconnecting the selector lever cable end from the transmission manual lever before extracting the cable from its bracket. When installing the cable shield and lock tab on vehicles with 5R55S transmissions proceed with the same method used for other models. Identification of completion requires safe and secure locking tabs together with the cable end connected to the ball stud followed by a listening for the click when pressing the cable into the bracket during installation of selection lever cables for both transmission types. A new shield should be installed to the transmission manual lever after attaching the selector lever cable end and only if the current shield becomes unsecure. Reinstall the center console left side panel after connecting the selector lever cable to both the housing and lever and pushing the cable and grommet through the floorpan. Before concluding the repair check if the engine starts correctly while the selector lever is in PARK and NEUTRAL and if the reversing lamps activate in REVERSE; adjust the cable if necessary.
