How to Address Issues with the Ignition Switch in a Ford Taurus?

The first step for ignition switch servicing or repair requires power disconnection from the supplemental restraint system (SRS). You need to remove the two screws which secure the lower steering column panel cover and also detach the cover itself. When reinstalling these screws they should be tightened to 9 Nm. The two bolts that keep the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement should be tightened to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.) before installation. First disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector followed by unscrewing and taking out the ignition switch by removing the two screws while tightening the screws to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.) when reinstalling. The supplement restraint system (SRS) will be repowered after reversing all removal steps.

Service and repair operations on the ignition switch need to start by depowering the supplemental restraint system (SRS). The two bolts should be detached before placing the hood latch release handle to the side. The relationship between servicing the ignition switch starts with removing screws that secure the lower instrument panel steering column cover followed by unbolting the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement panel and the reinforcement panel. It is crucial to apply 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.) torque when reinstalling these components. The ignition electrical connection should be disconnected first when the switch remains in the OFF position then proceed to remove the screws securing the ignition switch. Follow the removal procedure in reverse to install the ignition switch by securing its screws at 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.). The final step includes initiating power to the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
