To remove the rear wheel hub assembly, first raise the rear of the vehicle and secure it on jackstands, then take off the rear wheels and axleshafts. For 1986 and earlier models, use a screwdriver to remove the locking wedge from the adjusting nut keyway slot before taking off the wheel bearing adjusting nut with a large socket. For 1987 and later models, use a hub wrench to remove the hub nut, ensuring the drive tangs engage the slots in the hub nut, noting that the hub nuts have right-hand and left-hand threads. Next, remove the right hub nut by turning it counterclockwise and the left hub nut clockwise, paying attention to the "LH" and "RH" markings for reassembly. For 1986 and earlier models, pull the brake drum/wheel hub assembly off the axle spindle by hand, and if it resists, retract the brake shoes slightly. In 1987 and later models, remove the brake drum from the wheel hub assembly by taking off the push-on drum retainers and pulling the drum off; if it's stuck, retract the brake shoes. A large two-jaw puller is needed for 1987 and later models to remove the wheel hub assembly from the axle spindle, using any necessary adapters to avoid damage. After removing the outer bearing from the hub, use a brass drift to drive out the inner bearing cone and inner seal from the back of the wheel hub, then clean the inside of the wheel hub and the axle spindle. Inspect the bearing assemblies for wear or damage, replacing them if necessary, and if the outer races need replacement, drive them out with a brass drift and install new races with a bearing driver. Before installation, pack the inner and outer wheel bearing assemblies with high-temperature grease, or pack them by hand if a bearing packer is unavailable. Install the newly packed inner wheel bearing into the brake drum hub and a new hub inner seal, ensuring the logo faces up. Coat the inner seal lip with grease and wrap the spindle with electrician's tape to protect the seal during installation, then slide the hub and drum assembly over the spindle carefully. Install the newly packed outer wheel bearing into the wheel hub, followed by the hub nut, adjusting the wheel bearing preload while ensuring the tab is in the keyway with identification markings facing out. Install the axleshaft and brake drum for 1987 and later models, tightening the fasteners to the specified torque, and note that push-on retainers for 1987 and later brake drums do not need reinstallation. Adjust the brakes if they were retracted, then install the wheel, remove the jackstands, and lower the vehicle, finally rechecking the torque on the axleshaft bolts.
