Ford Camshaft schedules more powerful pulls and mileage among the lineup. Henry Ford opened shop in 1903 and since then the company has been pursuing practical innovation, beginning with the moving assembly line that cut build time by half to EcoBoost engines that deliver the punch but not the fuel guzzling that can afflict volume production. Singing a song request or a destination, Ford drivers command SYNC, and Co-Pilot360 keeps an eye on the road, brakes in the case of immediate obstacles, and pushes the wheel to maintain a straight course, letting daily commuters feel more relaxed and in control. The march has not ceased, and Ford bolts batteries into trucks such as the F-150 Lightning, proving that zero-tailpipe emissions do not cancel towing muscle, and that the same insatiable interest in progress on the necessary aroma is what has all the showroom vehicles peeking at safer, cleaner miles ahead. All Fords are geared towards low prices of ownership. Made of hard iron casting with well-profiled lobes, the Camshaft causes the intake and exhaust valves to move in perfect harmony, forcing fresh charge in and spent fumes out so the engine can breathe freely, be cooler, and at the same time provide the vehicle with a pull that sticks even when the road gets steeper or the load increases. A broader lobe separation angle on this Camshaft stabilizes idle but is in reserve for full mid-range punch, thus still allowing engines to gulp fuel without propelling a family, cargo, or camping gear. The Camshaft strength test reveals that the Camshaft takes a beating when on high rpm, increases engine life, and keeps the repair cost under control.

Ford Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the camshaft in SOHC four cylinder engine on 2000-2011 Ford Ranger?
    A:
To remove the camshaft pull the car battery negative terminal, other accessories required include valve cover, timing belt cover, and timing belt. If fitted, the spring clip from the hydraulic valve lash adjuster end of each cam follower should be removed. Remove all the cam followers and keep them in order, for reassembly, compress the valve springs with the help of valve spring compressor. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters but make sure that each is placed together with the cam follower. Next you need to loosen the camshaft sprocket mounting bolt along with the washer, to do this use a long screwdriver to stop the camshaft from rotating. Use a puller to remove the sprocket and, if the vehicle has one, the belt guide should also be removed. Remove the camshaft sprocket locating pin in camshaft end and the camshaft retaining plate from rear bearing pedestal. Lift the car using jackstands, center a floor jack just below the engine, place wood on the jack pad and then take off the engine mount bolts and nuts. Lift the engine, insert pieces of wood between the engine support stands and frame brackets, lower the engine to the wood pieces and then remove the jack. Take out the camshaft with a lot of caution after getting rid of the camshaft seal so as not to destroy the bearings and journals. For installation, cover the camshaft journals and bearings with the engine assembly lube or moly-base grease and slip the camshaft over the Cylinder Head. Replace the outer bolts of the retaining plate to this cylinder head, lubricate the new camshaft oil seal with engine oil and tap it at the front of the cylinder head. Put the belt guide and pin at the leading end of the camshaft and then knock on the sprocket. On threads of the old sprocket bolt, it is required to apply a new sprocket bolt or, in another option, Teflon sealing tape. Treat the hydraulic lash adjusters with engine assembly lube or moly-base grease, and reinstall them in their original positions; subsequently, apply the same on the camshaft lobes and the cam followers. Replace the timing belt, compress the each valve spring, put each cam follower in its place sitting on its related valve end and adjuster, and put the retaining spring clips if any. Last of all, reinstall the components in reverse order, restore the system, and you'll be ready to go.
  • Q: What precautions should be taken when working on engines with timing chains, camshafts, or cylinder head removal in V8 engine on Ford Mustang?
    A:
As for these engines, they are very complicated to be serviced and many operations can be accomplished only with special tools. In any operation where time chains, camshafts or cylinder head is involved, the steps on the manual must be understood well, and during the disassembly must use the special tools; otherwise the engine may be damaged. Starting by taking off the valve covers and the timing chain cover, the timing chains and the rocker arms. Check the thrust clearance of the camshaft(s) with the help of a dial indicator, if the clearance exceeds the maximum admissible value the camshaft as well as the cylinder head should be replaced. Take off the camshaft sprockets and when working on 4.6L engines make sure to lock the camshaft and loosen the sprocket bolt; also make a mark on the sprockets for ease of re-fitting. Remove camshaft cap bolts on the right side cylinder head, beginning on the front camshaft bearing cap on 5.0L engines, on bolts, and then and loosen those only 1/4-turn at a time to avoid damage. Perform the same on the left side cylinder head to repeated the same process as the previous process. The camshaft should be removed from the cylinder head: to do this, lift the camshaft gently and tap the caps if needed, and be careful not to lose orientation concerning parts. Check the cam lobes and bearing journals for such things as wear, scoring, crack, and stretch and measure the diameter of each camshaft journal and lift of each camshaft lobe with a micrometer if any of the camshafts does not meet technical requirement, it should be replaced. Clean the camshaft journals and use just a finger to wipe off any lubricant and place the camshaft in position, apply the Plastigage on the camshaft journals, put on the bearing caps and tighten the bolts to match the factory torque specifications before checking the crushed Plastigage width under the scale. In case of the clearance being above or below the recommended limit or if the journal diameters are below actual specifications, then overhaul or change the camshaft and cylinder head as required. To prevent the two surfaces from getting scratched pull the Plastigage off slowly and effectively and make sure the timing chain tensioner oil feed tube and the reservoir are cleaned before putting the camshaft caps. In case the lash adjusters or the camshaft followers were removed, replace them to their initial position, apply moly-base grease or the camshaft installation lube on the camshaft lobes and on the bearing journals and place the camshaft(s). Place the camshaft caps properly and place all the bolts loosely and tighten them in turns in the given torque setting. And finally before tightening the timing chain(s), the tensioners and the timing chain cover, undo them in the reverse method to the installation.
