How to Service and Repair the Ignition Lock Cylinder on Ford Mustang?

The first step in servicing or repairing the ignition lock cylinder includes taking off the steering column cover followed by removing the three screws holding the lower steering column shroud in place. You should insert a small punch into the designated hole through the RUN-keyed position to extract the ignition lock cylinder. The installation process starts with reversing the removal steps while you must lubricate the ignition lock cylinder prior to attaching it.

How to Safely Remove a Non-Functional Ignition Lock Cylinder on Ford Ranger?

Wearing safety glasses is necessary for servicing non-functional steering column lock cylinders of vehicles with air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) while working and while handling air bag modules to avoid injuries from accidental air bag deployments. Service live air bag modules by placing them with the trim cover pointed away from the operator at all times and avoid placing them at any point where the trim cover faces downwards. You should use soap-water to wash your hands after an air bag deployment since it removes irritating sodium hydroxide residue from your skin surface. Touching the connectors on an air bag module will result in accidental deployment so you need to avoid this process. Repairing damaged or discolored trim covers on air bag modules should lead to their replacement rather than painting them. Vehicle sensors must have the correct orientation to function properly in SRS systems and researchers must inspect the sensor attachment bracket and wiring interface for damage after collisions no matter if the air bags have deployed. When servicing front or side air bag components or approaching air bag sensors the service technician must discharge back up power supply by disconnecting the battery ground wire for one minute and disconnecting all auxiliary batteries and power supplies when those are equipped. The ignition switch lock cylinder's removal starts with disconnecting the battery ground and steering wheel removal followed by cap twist-off and subsequent drill extraction of the cylinder retaining pin as the drill passes through a 1/8-inch diameter drill bit into the ignition key slot with 3/8-inch diameter drilling until the lock cylinder separates from its mount. Scrape away the old ignition switch lock cylinder along with discarded drill shavings before you take out the bearing retainer the bearing and the gear while you confirm the steering column has no drill shavings and no damage. You should install a new ignition switch lock cylinder and retrace all steps of removal before inspecting the operation of the ignition switch lock cylinder.
