How to service and repair the lower steering shaft on Ford Mustang?

A vehicle should be set in the neutral gear and positioned on a hoist before starting lower steering column shaft service and repair work. Begin by taking out the steering column bolt which joins the steering column shafts and discard it before installing the new bolt with a torque of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). The steering column coupling bolt should be removed before discarding it but it needs a torque of 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) when reinstalling. The two dash boot bearing nuts need removal before installation where torque should be set at 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). Collapse the upper column shaft until you disconnect the coupling from the lower shaft before uninstalling the lower column shaft. The final step includes executing the opposite procedure to finish the process. Carefully monitor the steering column to avoid its rotation because disconnection of the shaft might damage the clock spring. The necessary repair includes removing and resetting the clock spring after any rotation occurs.

What Precautions Should Be Taken When Servicing the Steering Shaft to Avoid Damaging the Clock Spring on Ford Ranger?

Service the steering column shaft with caution because allowing its rotation when the intermediate shaft is disconnected will damage the Clock Spring. The remedy for Clock Spring rotation requires following the Air Bag Systems guidelines for recentering the component. The service technician must eliminate both steering column shaft bolts from their use because they must be replaced with new ones. You must first detach the bolt between the upper intermediate shaft and lower intermediate shaft midpoint before folding down the lower shaft for bolt disposal. Take the intermediate shaft from inside the vehicle by first removing its bolt that connects to the steering column assembly as you discard the hardware. Complete the project by performing the opposite instructions for removal.
