If one needs to overhaul, often because of leakage, there should be investigations before one proceeds. The job is much easier if new or factory rebuilt calipers are available on an exchange basis. In case of calipers' rebuilding, it is needed to know that a rebuild kit would be required and calipers should be rebuilt in set. First apply the parking brakes and then lay them opposite the end that is to be serviced or repaired. Before removing the wheel, loosen the lug nuts of the wheel, lift the car and put it on jackstands. Remove the banjo bolt for the brake hose and disconnect the hose from the caliper, cap the hose to insure that minimum loss of the brake fluid or air from getting into the hydraulic control unit if the vehicle is equipped with four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System . If the caliper cannot be removed then, better leave the hose connected and hang the caliper using wire to prevent bleeding of the brake system. Disconnect the caliper from the steering knuckle during the course of the brake pad replacement. Wipe the exterior of the caliper with brake system cleaner and do not use petroleum based solvents then position the caliper for work on a clean bench. Place paper or a piece of wooden for instance on the end of the piston; emit compressed air while pulling the piston from the caliper, and hands should be out of the way. They must be unbolted and then slid off the stem with care so as not to damage the piston seal(s) or the dust boot(s). Check for any defects on the piston and the caliper bore and change if necessary. Take off the bleeder valve and check the state of the caliper pins for corrosion; do not wipe the lubricating gel with a cloth. If more lubrication is required then pins and boots need to be replaced, as these are supplied with special gel attached to them. Wash all the part with brake system cleaner and examine the condition of the caliper bore, if it is severely pitted or damaged replace it. Run in the piston in the bore and see that it glides well. Screw the bleeder valve to the caliper and tighten then apply clean brake fluid to the new piston seal and / or caliper bore making sure that the seal is not twisted. Lubricate the outside of the piston and insert them into the bore, use the C- Clamp and a wooden block to force the pistons into the bore about ¾ inch in to the bores making sure that they are straight. Place the dust boots on the pistons and place it on the caliper. Fasten the brake hose to the caliper is with new sealing washers and then tighten the banjo bolt to the recommended torque value. If the banjo bolt was loosened or removed bleed the brakes and replace the wheel , then lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the corresponding torque. To check the operation of the brakes, press the brake pedal several times and get the pads in contact with the disc before returning the vehicle back into normal use.
